At Wasaga, Ontario Life Is a Dog Friendly Beach

Guest post by Karen Friesecke of BloggieStylish

The recent spate of cold weather has had me fondly thinking of the warmer days of Summer. This past Labour Day, some friends and I decided to head up to Wasaga for a day of beach fun.

Beach view

Wasaga Beach is an Ontario Provincial Park that is located on Georgian Bay, which is part of Lake Huron. At 14 kilometers, it is the longest freshwater beach in the world and is split up into eight sections. Wasaga boasts beautiful white sandy beaches and shallow, warm water which makes it an ideal family destination. The fee for day use is modest – I think that is was $10 or $12 per carload – but I can’t remember. At an easy 1 1/2 hour drive from Toronto, it is a popular summer destination for most Southern Ontarians.

As a child, I used to visit Wasaga Beach yearly. Since I haven’t been back for about 16 years, a lot has changed. In November 2007, 20 buildings of the main drag were ravaged by fire. There are plans to rebuild this area, but nothing had been done when I visited. Also, all the beaches were dog friendly, but now dogs are restricted to Beach 1. On a happier note, the old bathrooms were upgraded to cleaner, more modern facilities.

Main drag

The main drag is okay and has the typical tourist trappings of food and souvenir vendors. It’s no Daytona or Myrtle Beach, but it is acceptable. There is a small waterslide park and midway rides for the kiddies and most of the food vendors don’t mind if your dog sits with you on the patio.

The accommodations in the beach area leave something to be desired.  I stayed in Wasaga Beach twice when I was a kid and my memories of the accommodations are less than warm and fuzzy. Most of the hotels and motels were built in the 60s and 70s and are in dire need of upgrades. The hotels that are decent, and I use this term loosely, have very basic amenities. Most do not have internet connections, in-room coffee makers or housekeeping services. Some places don’t even have telephones in the rooms. Almost all hotels have a 30 day cancellation policy, which I find absolutely ridiculous, and upfront payment upon check-in. For what you get, the rooms are expensive. Most rooms start at $100 per night and double the price on the long weekends. About half the hotels allow pets, but take it from me, keep Wasaga as a day trip. Booking a hotel in Wasaga will more than likely result in disappointment.

Karen and Jersey

As for my day at the beach? It was really a lot of fun! The sun was warm and the wind was almost non-existant. We had a good time swimming in the warm water and Jersey enjoyed many a game of fetch. There are a lot of trees near the dunes so we had no problem finding shade. Picnic tables are available, but you have to get there early to get one. Some folks even brought little hibachis to the beach for a barbecue.

I have never replied to one of these things before , however I think sometimes the truth hurts Leah , I am with Lorenna's on this one ,it has nothing to do with economy or anything else . But we as a Canadian  nation have lost a lot of our own  traditions . When you go to other countries to live  you do as they say or LEAVE . If you don't like what we have here leave go back to where you came from ,please .Enough Is Enough Is that asking nice enough for you . another dog lover

you're right about that. that's why they ask you for money upfront...lol...and not to mention the requirement of "canadian experience" !...doesn't matter you just landed....but the point is lorenna is just right. lot of new comers are afraid of dogs...even if they're Chihuahua sized...lol...other than that everything it's just ok...even the bugs...lol...who's (not) afraid of bugs ?

maybe you forgot that your dog is a canine and not a tax paying human

So dogs cant go to the beach because they will disrupt the Plovers??? I guess little kids and ignorant teenagers and adults that litter are loud and chase birds are safe. Last time I checked my dog listens better than most kids/youth i have come across at the beach.

Leah - In the 15 month history of this blog, I have never removed a person's comment. I remember when the comment was posted and, open and honest, I considered deleting it. However, people are entitled to their opinions ... including you. Suffice it to say that I am certainly more aligned with your way of thinking than Lorenna's.

I think you should remove Lorenna's comment about immigrants. I think it is inappropriate for this blog.

how rude of you to imply that Canada could ban dogs as a result of immigrants who are afraid of dogs. this is the most uneducated comment I have ever heard. Canada relies on immigrants to keep its economy and GDP growing so that people like yourself can afford to have dogs and pets and take them on leisure activities - not to mention - they keep the country an interesting and exciting place. I am embarassed for people like yourself. Grow Up

i have been told the same thing three years ago about this bird thing and i think thats bullshit, i just want to go there to bring my dogs in the water thats all and you cant even do that, WHY the water in not the beach they dont control the water or own it DO THEY?
but anyways if anyone is close to caledon take them to the credit river thats where i take my dogs to swim all the time, or find the little town in caledon called inglewood and there is a good spot to take your dogs to play in the water.

Hey if you are from Toronto.. Cherry Beach actually has a huge offleash area on the beach where tons of dogs swim and occaisionally their owners as well. Seems fairly good for swimming since just a little up the beach is where the people swim. Check it out :)

We just visited Wasaga last week (July 16/2010) and sadly dogs are not allowed on the usual beach (the last beach). Apparently the are considered to be a threat to some endangered species there. Basically dogs are allowed in the water on the Canal side of the beach area and on grassy areas behind the "no dog" signs in the beach areas. That is not on the beach. I was told this will likely remain the case until the end of August 2010.

I got the same excuse two years in a row -- about the birds being the reason the "dog beach' was closed in Wasaga. There are so many people that want an area to bring their dogs to swim in Simcoe. I have two Weims and have had a heck of a time finding a spot to take my dogs. There is so much beach and water -- I don't know why there can't be at least one spot!

Are dogs allowed in the water at Wasaga beach? if so where? is very sad not to have a beach close to Toronto where you can take your kids and your dog into the beach...no fair...maybe one they Canada will also ban dogs...I am sure all of this is because theres lots of immigrants who are affraid of dogs

So I called Wasaga Beach Provincial Park Office to confirm and YES, the bay side beach is closed due to the nesting Plovers and will be for the rest of the summer. I have been to the river side beach and it's not as nice, like TDL says. I asked the park ranger if there were plans to relocate the dog beach somewhere else and the answer was no. Until beach one opens OR the beach is relocated, I'm not going back. Too bad 'cause this *was* a nice place to go with the dogs :(

Last year (Aug 2009) we drove to beach one with 2 cars of people, kids and dogs. We paid our parking ($16) per car, only to drive in to find the dog beach relocated to the boat launch on the river side. One look at the steep drop off, boats speeding by and oil floating on the water and we left VERY disappointed. The conservation of the Plover bird will likely continue to close beach one to dogs for most of the summer and most summers to come. The Plover is already nesting and the beach is closed to dogs as of May 2010. Please don't waste your driving time and money - find somewhere else to go.

Actually...dogs are not allowed on the beach unless leashed. I know...I got a $90 ticket for not having my dog on a leash at the DOG BEACH in April.
