Bullied by the Blog

There are a couple of schools of thought when it comes to blogging. One is to post on a consistent schedule – every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, for example. The hope is that the blog’s readers get into the habit of checking for a new post on those days. It’s the way most bloggers do it – including us … until yesterday.

Dog and Laptop

Another school of thought is to post only when you’ve written something you are excited to share. The theory here is that the blog’s readers wait with baited breath for every post, because they know the author only delivers top-notch stuff – something he/she thinks is important, is passionate about, and can’t wait to share with them. This is our philosophy going forward.

Let me explain the reason for the change.

Last week was a bit out of control here. We’ve had some delays with the closing process on the house and it’s still unclear if we are on schedule or not. Regardless, we’ve been packing and making appointments as if December 22nd is our last day here. On Thursday and Friday Rod was providing expert testimony in Pennsylvania State Court – a stressful event that required a lot of preparation and resulted in many hours of lost sleep. And, on Saturday, while driving home from an afore mentioned appointment, the check engine light came on in the RAV4. By Sunday – which is usually a workday here – we both desperately needed to recharge. We decided to play hooky and spend the entire day on the sofa watching movies.

That decision did not come without some angst. I knew if I didn’t work on Sunday the blog post for Monday would not be ready. And then it occurred to me … I’d had that feeling before. There was the time the winery tour in the Finger Lakes came to an unceremonious end because of a looming blog deadline. Time with friends in Charlevoix was cut short, and a campfire with my family was missed entirely due to an unfinished posts that just had to go up. Well, no more!

I’m making my New Year’s resolution a little early: I’m going to savor the experiences that will come with traveling in the Winnebago in 2011, and I will not sacrifice that enjoyment to meet an artificial deadline I’ve imposed upon myself. I will not be bullied by the blog.

It’s silly, really. Rod and I are so looking forward to RVing full-time, mostly because we won’t have the pressure of time. There is no foreseeable “end date” of our trip. We don’t have anywhere we must be by a particular date. The freedom is palpable! Yet, we would bind ourselves to a posting schedule and give up the very thing we are working so hard to create.

I love writing this blog. I love that our readers have become a community where we share and discuss our experiences. I want that to continue to grow.

I also want to be free to live in the moment. I want to take time to enjoy the simple things with Rod and the dogs, without the chest-tightening, gut-wrenching cloud of “blog post deadline” hanging over me. I don’t want writing posts to go from something I do because it’s fun to something that feels like a job.

My hope is that by removing the pressure of the schedule, the posts are even better. I hope you will feel the excitement and the love we have for what we are doing. That’s really what this is about, after all.

Even though we may not be posting on a set schedule, we will be posting multiple times a week and we hope you’ll stop by regularly. If you’re thrown a bit by the lack of structure, there are a couple of ways to make sure you don’t miss a post. You can sign up to receive them by email (just click the envelop icon at the top of the next column), or you can subscribe to the RSS feed.

If you’re not familiar with RSS – it may be the greatest thing EVER. It’s like your own personal Internet library. Just add your subscriptions and new content from your favorite sites will show up in one place. Add search terms like “mountain biking” or “pet travel” and articles from across the web will automatically appear for your perusal. I use Google Reader and here’s what mine looks like:

Google Reader Image

So in 2011, our posts may not show up with military precision. But I can guarantee they will be heart-felt pieces I’ve taken pleasure in writing.

Thank you, Mary-Alice! I totally agree that a certain amount of pressure is good. Just living in the Winnebago and navigating our lives with the dogs requires that we find things to do that include the boys. And sharing those experiences is part of the fun of having them! When you start to say no to an experience because of an imagined obligation to share on a set schedule, that's when the problems begin. I'd rather have the full experience and share it a little later, than have a partial experience and share it "on time" (whatever that is!).
Mary-Alice Dec 20, 2010 at 8:54 pm
I hear you, Amy! And you may have noticed that I no longer post every day either. The pressure is helpful, sometimes -- it pushes me out of the house to try something new with Chloe, or reminds me to bring her with me (most recently to the letterpress studio, which I hadn't done before) -- but when it stops you from enjoying an experience, that's TOO much pressure. Good decision, good post!

Hi there, Ruby's Raiser! I totally agree with your assessment - I think people's schedules are so hectic that they might have to wait several days before they get some quiet time to catch up on their reading.

And, you will be seeing us in your neck of the woods soon. I've been asked to speak at the Denver RV, Sports, Boat & Travel show in the beginning of March. I can't wait to see you guys again!
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 20, 2010 at 3:25 am
Deborah, I have been repeating this mantra out loud for days!
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 20, 2010 at 3:24 am
Yes - a mental health break was desperately needed! I didn't know it was that obvious. LOL!!! :-D
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 20, 2010 at 3:22 am
Mel - I know that I find it impossible to keep up with the blogs I read on a daily basis. Thank goodness for RSS!! And, I'm glad to get you thinking - it's the perfect time of the year for it. :-)
Shauna @ Fido & Wino Dec 19, 2010 at 3:33 am
Good for you! Sometimes I feel bullied by the blog too... and then I remember that the only way I am going to have anything interesting to prattle on about is if I do interesting things... like, in the real world.

So I think that is just great! :)

Hey Amy! Great decision, take the pressure off of yourself -- your blog is fantastic and should be as fun for you to write as it is for us to read! With "Raising Ruby," I always felt comfortable at around 3-4 posts a week; sometimes I wrote more, sometimes less. But the key for me was feeling "committed" not "compelled!"

The other thing I found was that some of my most loyal followers would read in spurts -- not daily, some not even weekly. Perhaps once every few weeks, they'd visit and catch up on all the posts they hadn't seen since their last visit. It's how I've been keeping up with all the blogs lately, as life has gotten busier these past couple of months.

Hope we'll be seeing you out our way sometime soon!
Anil Dec 16, 2010 at 1:23 pm
I think blogging schedules are more beneficial (or detrimental) to the writer - readers who enjoy your content will keep coming back and back. Besides, why turn your site or travels into stress?
Deborah Flick Dec 16, 2010 at 2:41 am
Go for it Amy! I fully support you. I too have been struggling with the very same issue. Not sure where I'll land---but, not being bullied by my blog has it's appeal. Hmm.....is this a nascent movement/ "I am not bullied by my blog!" or "I will not be bullied by my blog" Say it loud!
Karen Friesecke Dec 16, 2010 at 1:33 am
There is nothing wrong with playing hooky every once in awhile, especially when it seemed like you guys really needed a mental health break! I've been slacking a bit myself lately, there has been a lot of "stuff" to do these past few weeks. 2011 WILL bring good things and I look forward to reading about the RV adventures :)
Melspetpals Dec 16, 2010 at 12:09 am
Amy - I FULLY support your and Rod's decision! To be honest, I am one of those people who loves to read your thoughtful and inspiring blog posts, but I'm often too busy to read them right away (in other words, I don't wait with baited breath). I simply go back to see what interesting things you guys have shared. I think your post gives all of us a great chance to rethink what we want our lives (and blogs) to be about.

I LOVE this post!
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 15, 2010 at 10:43 pm
Thanks Maggie. Yep, I'm planning to post 3 or 4 times a week as well - I think the important part is to give myself the freedom to post, or not to post. Feeling obligated really zaps the creativity.
Hilary Dec 15, 2010 at 10:26 pm
I love this, Amy! I agree; post when you WANT, not just because you have to. I'm posting one a day in December for a blogging challenge, but in my case, I need to get in the habit of blogging in general! But after this month, I'm going to try for whenever an idea comes, not on a schedule. I also agree with Mary Haight that quality over quantity is the best course...

Oh my gosh. Great post. It's really easy to get into a blogging rut, I think. There are those days that I think, "I have to post something, but... I have nothing to say!" I've cut down on my days, too. I used to strive for 5, now I'm happy with 3 or, on good weeks, 4 posts. And, like most things in life, sometimes stepping away gives you the fresh perspective you need to recharge! Safe travels!

EdieJ Dec 15, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Ok, Amy, you're on. Let's do it! You know where to find me, email-wise. And you're right, it'll be a lot more fun if we do it together.
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 15, 2010 at 7:53 pm
Edie, you crack me up!! Perhaps we could work together on your questionnaire - I think it would be fun and make it less like an obligation. Plus, I already know one other pet blogger that was thinking of posting on the subject. Let me know, I'd be happy to help out!
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 15, 2010 at 7:48 pm
Thanks so much for your support! I believe too that the blog will be better for the change.
EdieJ Dec 15, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Thanks so much for this post! It came at a very opportune time. I'm also feeling bullied by my blog -- particularly today, when I promised to post more winners of my contest but can't decide after all! -- but it's part of the larger question of what I'm doing and why and what I hope to get out of blogging, and whether I'm achieving it.

In fact, I think I'm going to make up a questionnaire and see if I can get other pet bloggers on board to post on the subject... Oy, by making this public now I've bullied myself into a commitment to something else. ;-)

WHAT?!?! No computer on the weekends?? Michele, I'm not sure we can be friends anymore. LOL!! Seriously, good for you. We all need a chance to recharge the batteries. It will be an interesting experience to find the balance between "vacation" and "work" when we're traveling full time.
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 15, 2010 at 7:16 pm
Yep, Diane - our daily lives deliver enough angst. No need to cause ourselves anymore! I'll look forward to hearing from you, but no pressure. If I'm going to take myself off the hook, I'm going to do the same for everyone else, too.
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 15, 2010 at 7:05 pm
Thank you, Mary! :-)
Amy@GoPetFriendly Dec 15, 2010 at 7:03 pm
Hi Kevin! I always read posts from the RSS feeds as well. I could never remember all the urls for the blogs I want to read, and I have a think about too may messages piling up in my email. RSS makes it so I can do it on my schedule and not miss a thing. BTW - glad to see you're back!
Buchelesk9s Dec 15, 2010 at 5:09 pm
I love it! Sometimes I don't blog at all because I feel like I am just doing it because the blog "experts" say I should if I want people to read it. I want to blog when I feel compelled, not because I am being compelled by some outside force. No, I don't have a lot of readers, but the blog is as much for me and my family as it is for the readers. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your resolution! Enjoy your time and I truly believe you will have a better blog for it.

Hi Amy, As a blogger, I fully get it! I know people who blog every day--Sunday-Sunday. I'm not kidding. Some people post 3x a day! I subscribed to 3 of these blogs and honestly don't read them. I love blogging too, and while I believe I have important information to share, it is not hard news that has to come out every single day or several times a day. I actually don't turn on the computer most weekends. Did I hear gasps?
Writing about animals is a joy. I also need down time. I truly believe the best blogs are the ones that come out at a maximum of 3x a week. More than that is just too much!
I still read a daily newspaper--every day. But that is different. I think you and Rod will be better bloggers (you are both quite good now) by being refreshed and not fighting the "I have to do this mentality."
Diane Silver Dec 15, 2010 at 2:30 pm
I think this is a super idea! I'm so busy myself, I don't even think about what day blog posts show up. I just read them when I see them! And I always enjoy yours.

And, as a blogger myself, who has been ridiculously busy as of late, I understand the angst! I'm catching up on things now, including a little something I owe you!!

I think most of us write multiple posts a week, and if readers sign up for the RSS they read at their leisure - I don't think many wait for a particular day with anticipation that a new story will be published and get upset if it's not there....while it's fair to expect a selection of posts that you are accustomed to getting, life is so busy you just can't be so regimented that you segment time on MWF to read blogs...I guess I could be wrong?

I think readers get a higher quality of post to read when the writer is happy in what they are doing - read not stressed to the point of being strung out - and I think they can sense it in the writing. So go be happy! I've subscribed as that's the best way to keep up anyway!
Kevin Dec 14, 2010 at 8:02 pm
I like hearing about your exploits, whenever I can get them. As a blogger and a blog consumer I understand the need to be consistent when blogging (something I have not been in the past), but when it comes to reading I often read the blogs I enjoy through a RSS reader and at a time when I am not stressed and I can both enjoy and adsorb the information.

Hope the closing is back on track and look forward to hearing more from you, whenever that is.

That sounds like a great plan...You are both very dedicated to cut a wine trip short for the blog :) We can't wait to read about your travels! We'll be spending 4 months traveling around the U.S. next year with Gus and will be using your site religiously for dog-friendly hotels and attractions!
