Manitoulin Island to Tobermory via Ferry
Wanting to head south and east from Sault Ste. Marie, you can drive around Lake Huron … or you can cross on a dog friendly ferry ride! With the latter plan in mind, we headed to Manitoulin Island. This was the shortest drive of our road trip – about 215 miles. The terrain was stark and rugged, making it all the more beautiful. Farm borders were marked by cross-timbered fences. A resident we talked to said times change very slowly on the island. It was peaceful.
We stayed at the Huron Motor Lodge in South Baymouth. For $10 extra, we requested a small, quaint cottage that, in many ways, was the best accommodation of the trip. Walking along the bay that afternoon, Amy and the boys decided to construct their own stacked stone figurine.
The next morning, we got the 11:10 Chi Cheemaun ferry to Tobermory on the Bruce Penninsula. It was about a 2 hour crossing in glorious sunshine. Several dogs were on board, and they all enjoyed the trip. We got to talk to several passengers who shared their own pet travel experiences. Very enlightening and encouraging – pet owners need what GoPetFriendly provides.
Our last planned overnight stay was supposed to be in Niagara Falls. As we headed there, we suspected Buster was not feeling well. At 5 pm we decided to push for home so we could be near our own vet. We pulled into the Poconos at 1:30 am – 3,936 miles in 23 days.
