The Corn Palace
Earlier this week, I wrote about Sioux Falls and The Badlands. In between those two spots (actually, closer to Sioux Falls) is the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.
Amy fondly remembered the attraction from a childhood vacation. I’m thinking, “Really, sounds like childhood abuse to me.” Turns out it’s actually an a-maize-ing attraction. Amy 1, Rod 0.
The Corn Palace functions as a local community sports/entertainment venue. It hosts concerts, trade shows, and the home basketball games of the Mitchell High School Kernels (no, not Colonels … Kernels).
Each summer, the Corn Palace is stripped and redecorated with 3,000 bushels of new corn and grains. Over a half a million ears of corn are sawed in half (lengthwise) and nailed to the building. The corn murals are redone each year with a new theme using designs created by local artists. This has been going on every year since 1892. Inside, photos of every Corn Palace line the walls. Amy and I checked out what the Corn Palace looked like in the years we were born.
